Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.
PALM HARBOR - So which is it? Which is supreme: Size or speed?
In a game Monday between two of Pinellas County's toughest teams, speed and outside ability ruled over size, as Seminole sidelined host Palm Harbor University with a dazzling array of 3-point shots en route to a 61-54 victory.
"We played four quarters of basketball tonight," said Seminole coach Dave Swanson, whose team hit 10 3-pointers. "I thought when they made their run in the fourth quarter, we made adjustments. We limited their opportunities."
The Warhawks (19-3) kept the lead for good once they got it in the third quarter. In the first half there were 10 lead changes and neither team led by more than six.
But Seminole got a three-point play and a 3-point basket from Allie Fogle, another triple from Chelsea Patterson and a basket from Jessamyn San Filippo, igniting an 11-4 run for a 39-31 lead midway through the third quarter.
The Hurricanes didn't give in, but they lacked the outside firepower of their adversaries. PHU had one 3-pointer.
The Warhawks led by nine halfway through the final quarter before two buckets by Latoya Whiting, who led all scorers with 25 points, sparked a 6-0 Hurricane run that trimmed the deficit to 52-49. But PHU (12-8) got no closer, thanks to a three-point play by San Filippo and a trey by Patterson. Poor free-throw also troubled the Hurricanes down the stretch; they were 2-of-8 from the line in the final quarter.
Patterson led Seminole with 22 points and Fogle added 20; each had four triples. Egypt Thomas added eight points. PHU's next highest scorer was Madison McNary with eight.
"I'm happy with the way the girls responded playing here," Swanson said. "Because we're small, we wanted to pressure them. And because we're small, we like shooting the 3."
