Relief on way to storm victims

TALLAHASSEE - The first round of checks will be mailed today to homeowners who faced multiple insurance deductibles from last year's hurricanes, Florida Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher said Tuesday.

The checks, each for about $1,500, come less than two months after state lawmakers approved spending as much as $150-million to help pay the second or third deductible homeowners faced because their property was damaged by more than one of the four hurricanes that hit Florida in 2004. The cost: $600,000 for the first 402 checks.

Another 10,000 homeowners' applications are being processed and Gallagher said as many as 40,000 homeowners might qualify. The application deadline is March 1. For information, call 1-800-227-8676.

Gallagher also said 87 percent of the 1.6-million hurricane insurance claims filed after Florida's four hurricanes have been settled for a combined loss of $21.4-billion.
