Annual event helps veterans get clothing, food, job leads

SPRING HILL - American Legion Auxiliary Unit 186 will present Stand Down 2005 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 23 at the post, 12091 Cortez Blvd.

The annual event is an effort to provide disadvantaged and homeless veterans with a broad range of necessities, including food, clothing, medical, legal and mental health assistance, job counseling and referral, as well as companionship and camaraderie.

Hernando-Pasco Hospice sets training schedule for volunteers

BROOKSVILLE - Hernando-Pasco Hospice will offer a volunteer training program to introduce opportunities that include patient or nonpatient contact.

A training program takes place 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 22-25 at the Hospice Care Team Support Center, 698 S Broad St.

Volunteer opportunities include visiting patients and families, helping to prepare meals in the Hospice House, assisting in the Hospice Thrift Store & More, working on office projects or being a hospice representative at health fairs.

Most volunteer training programs are 16 hours, except for thrift store training, which is eight hours.

Those wishing to participate in the training must preregister. Call Donna Barnett at 796-2611.

Hospice is a nonprofit agency that serves individuals affected by a life-limiting illness and their families, in Pasco and Hernando counties.

Tickets, sponsorships available for Arc Nature Coast dinner

BROOKSVILLE - Tickets are available for the Arc Nature Coast's annual recognition dinner and silent auction, which will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Brooksville Elks Lodge, 11494 Cortez Blvd.

Sponsorships and donations also are available. Table sponsorships are $40, and include a tent card on a table that seats eight. Business cards and company literature may be placed on the table. The fee includes a one-year membership in the Arc Nature Coast, the ARC/FL and the Arc/US.

Table sponsors will be listed in the event's program and the Arc's quarterly newsletter, The Archive.

The event will include a social hour, silent auction and cash bar starting at 5 p.m. Dinner will be at 6 p.m. Entertainment will include KennE performing as Elvis at 7 p.m.

Donations of gift certificates, products and other items are needed for the silent auction.

Elks lodge Feb. 19 dinner features comic magician

BROOKSVILLE - A night of entertainment featuring Homer Noodleman will be Feb. 19 at the Brooksville Elks Lodge 2582, 14494 Cortez Blvd.

Noodleman is a comedian, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, ventriloquist, comic magician and impressionist whose show has been featured on cruise lines and venues throughout the country.

Cocktails will be at 3 p.m. and music will be provided by Jim & Jim. Dinner will be at 5 p.m.; the menu choice is barbecued baby back ribs or fried chicken. The show will start at 7 p.m.

2004 home buyers: Apply for exemption by March 1

Hernando County Property Appraiser Alvin Mazourek reminds Hernando County residents who bought a home in the county during the 2004 tax year that applications for homestead exemptions must be made before March 1 to receive the benefit for the 2005 tax year.

Applications after March 1 will be considered for 2006.

Once the application has been filed and granted, the property is placed on the automatic renewal system each year. A renewal notice will be mailed every January, identifying the property and exemption status. If you still qualify for the exemption, you should keep the card as a receipt. Those who no longer qualify should sign the notice and return it to the Property Appraiser's Office.

Restaurant plans fundraisers to benefit Relay for Life

SPRING HILL - St. Sebastiaan's Belgium Microbrewery and Restaurant is hosting fundraising events for the Spring Hill 2005 Relay for Life event, which takes place April 22-23 at Springstead High School on Mariner Boulevard.

Events include:

Valentine's chance to win dinner for two at St. Sebastiaan's. Tickets are $2 and the drawing will be Feb. 10.

An auction of the staff will be Feb. 13, in which participants can bid on their favorite waiter.

Restaurant patrons may hang hearts on the brewery wall with names of loved ones for a $1 donation.

Chances are being sold for $5 each to win dinner for 10 people, with a special menu cooked by the chef at St. Sebastiaan's. The drawing will be in April.

Chances to win a crocheted afghan are $2 each. The drawing will be April 9.

A rummage sale, bake sale and car wash will be April 9 in the parking lot.

Individuals and teams are needed to participate in the Relay for Life. A team with as few as 10 people and $100 can enter or individuals can volunteer to be on an existing team. For information on team participation, call Gus Guadagnino at 799-5456.

Cancer survivors wishing to participate are asked to call Barbara Cara at 596-1926.

Relay for Life is an overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs with the American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
