Pirates kicker will sign with Missouri Valley

By DAWN REISS

CRYSTAL RIVER - Matt Pepito knew a Missouri Valley College football scholarship was his if he wanted it.

Vikings coach Paul Troth already had asked the Crystal River senior kicker what it would take for him to come play at the NAIA school.

So Pepito thought about it, went for a visit and waited a few days.

On Wednesday night, he verbally accepted the Missouri Valley College scholarship offer and will officially sign 9 a.m. Friday at Crystal River High School.

Pepito was the do-everything athlete for the Pirates (2-8), filling in at quarterback, running back, receiver, safety and punter, returning kickoffs and punts, in addition to kicking extra points and field goals.

Though he looked at Auburn and Central Florida, he quickly realized the scarcity of NCAA Division I scholarship offers for kickers.

After a trip to Missouri Valley's campus last weekend, Pepito knew it would be a good fit. The college has a business program, plus there is a strong possibility he will start as a freshman.

"Coach has confidence in me," Pepito said, "and I think I have the confidence to beat out the other kickers to start."
