Southeast edges champs

Linneiker Thelemarque's goal with 7:30 left in sudden death overtime gave Southeast a 4-3 win over defending Class 4A, District 13 champion Osceola (8-6) in the second of two semifinal games Wednesday at Lakewood.

Third-seeded Southeast (12-5-1) got three goals from Thelemarque en route to dethroning the champion.

"I just got the ball and knew what to do," Thelemarque said of his winning goal. "All I has to do was put it through the net."

The Warriors tied the score with less than a minute left in regulation. Jason Villalba scored after a free kick bounced back to him on the left side.

The Seminoles take on Lakewood in the title game 7 p.m. Friday.

Top-seeded Lakewood (9-3-2) advanced with a 2-1 win over Palmetto in the other semifinal.

Weslee Paul's goal with 19:49 left in the second half put the Spartans up for good. The goal came two minutes after Palmetto's Donald Christensen scored on Jonathan Allen's throw-in to tie.

Both squads failed to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities in the second half. The Spartans defense held Palmetto (5-11-4) to three shots.

4A-10: Tarpon falls hard

HUDSON - Wesley Chapel and Hudson won Class 4A, District 10 semifinals Wednesday to set up Friday's championship contest between the top seeds.

No. 1 Hudson defeated Ridgewood 4-1 after No. 2 Wesley Chapel handily beat Tarpon Springs 8-0 by the mercy rule.

Hudson (18-4-1) has won four district titles the past six seasons, and Wesley Chapel (15-8-2) clinched its second playoff spot in three seasons. The teams split this season, the Cobras winning 3-2 and the Wildcats taking the rematch 3-1.

"They're going to be ready and we're going to be ready," Hudson coach Ron Ladimir said.

Jose Arroyo had a hat trick to come within one goal of a Wesley Chapel record. Arroyo, who also had two assists, could have tied Gabe Montelongo's single-season mark of 32 goals but missed on a penalty kick in the second half.

Jon Heiser added two goals for Wesley Chapel, the latter off a pass from Luis Ortiz to end the game in the 77th minute.

3A-9: SPC surprises

CLEARWATER - St. Petersburg Catholic may have been the lower seed in Wednesday's Class 3A, District 9 semifinals, but coach Anatol Popovich didn't see it that way, especially after the Barons knocked off second-seed Clearwater Central Catholic 2-1 to reach the finals Friday against Tampa Catholic.

"Was it an upset?" Popovich said. "What is an upset? An upset doesn't mean anything. This is one of the toughest districts in the state. They are a good team and so are we."

After a sloppy first half, St. Petersburg Catholic finally broke through at the 27-minute mark of the second half when senior forward Tim Kolb broke free on the right side, beat a defender with a slick offensive move and put the ball past CCC goaltender Steven Hagenau on the far side.

"I was confident we could get one past them," Kolb said. "We were expecting to win when we came in."

The Barons face Tampa Catholic at CCC at 7 p.m. Fridaym. The Crusaders upset top-seed Jesuit 2-1 in a game that came down to penalty kicks. Tampa Catholic goalie Matt Malone not only stopped a Jesuit shot midway through the shootout to give the Crusaders the advantage, he scored the winner seconds later to give TC a 4-3 lead in kicks. He returned to the goal and made a stop on the next kick to clinch the victory.
