With Bush in town, expect traffic delays

By Times Staff

TAMPA - President Bush visits the Tampa Convention Center Friday right in the middle of the afternoon rush hour.

Expect traffic problems between Tampa International Airport and downtown. Police suggest downtown workers leave early or stay late.

Bush is scheduled to arrive at 4 p.m. and leave at about 6:30 p.m. His exact route was not disclosed for security reasons.

"We've dealt with rush hour traffic with presidential visits," police spokesman Joe Durkin said Thursday. "While the president's motorcade is moving, we shut down everything along his route. We do it to get him along safely and expeditiously."

Those caught in traffic along the motorcade's path can expect to wait 20 to 45 minutes, Durkin said.

"Pack a little extra patience," he said.
