World Series trophy coming to the Ted Williams Museum

Boston's award is going to be displayed during spring training.

HERNANDO - In Dave McCarthy eyes, there aren't many ways to better honor Ted Williams' legacy than to bring the Boston Red Sox World Series trophy to Citrus County.

Though an official date has not been set, McCarthy, the executive director of the Ted Williams Museum, said the trophy will be on display some time during the spring-training schedule in February or March.

McCarthy said he met with Red Sox chief operating officer Mike Dee in late November during a dinner in New Hampshire. They discussed the possibility of having the trophy come to Florida.

"I told him we'd love to have the people in Citrus County see the trophy since it's where Ted used to live," McCarthy said. "Dee said, "You're absolutely right.' "

McCarthy said a verbal agreement finally was worked out this year. The trophy will go to the 12th annual Ted Williams Museum induction ceremony, scheduled for March 16 in Fort Myers; then to the Ted Williams Museum in Citrus County, which hosted the induction ceremony prior to this year.

"It was a no-brainer," McCarthy said. "Ted was a Red Sox."

The museum also received another unexpected treat when Red Sox pitcher and former Hernando High School star Bronson Arroyo agreed earlier this week to sign autographs at the museum from 2-3 p.m. Wednesday. During that time, a new display will showcase Arroyo's Series glove, cleats, jersey and hat.

The Williams museum will give Arroyo a special honor, "The Kid," a namesake for Williams.

"The award is given to players who show a real love for the game," McCarthy said. "He definitely does that."
