Race over to Jacksonville to check out the Crunkfest, hosted by Big Boi, at Club 5 Friday night (2/4). Bring some cash. Tickets will set you back $100.
Is there a fabulous February in store for you? Here are a few destinations to consider if you want some insurance.
Jacksonville
Super Bowl Sunday (2/6): In case you haven't heard, there's this game between one team from New England and one team from Philadelphia. Even if you don't have tickets to one of the biggest sports events on the planet, head to Jax anyway. Marketers spooked by the record-setting price of ads are instead handing out free stuff galore, from cell phones to soups to test drives in a Cadillac. Then there are the parties. Almost every club in town is hosting some VIP event. Among them: the P. Diddy party at Plush, where it costs $200 from Ticketmaster, the Playboy party ($1,675 a ticket) and the Crunkfest at Club 5 in the hip Five Points district in Jacksonville. Friday's show (2/4) is hosted by Big Boi of Outkast, Saturday's is T.I. and The Dipset and Sunday's show is hosted by The Game and Young Buck. Tickets are $100 each night, and can be bought at the door, 1028 Park St. Call (904) 356-5555. For free or cheap fun, check out celebrity flag football game on Saturday at the University of Jacksonville. On the roster is Doug Flutie, Roger Staubach, Kenyatta Jones and many other NFL players and alumni. Tickets are $5. Among the free stuff: The Willie Gary Classic Dream Big Role Model Day on Friday features sports stars and other luminaries (Janet Jackson is rumored) promoting education from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Shoppes of Sherwood, 5045 Soutel Drive. Starting at 7 p.m. Saturday is the Super Bowl XXXIX celebration on the St. Johns River featuring an illuminated boat parade, followed by fireworks. Then there's Superfest, billed as THE place to be during Super Bowl weekend. It is a free, open-to-the-public party with three stages of music, food and drink booths, nightly fireworks and huge video screens. The main area is just east of the Jacksonville Landing at the shipyards, with water taxis running across the river. It runs Friday, 5 p.m.-2 a.m.; Saturday 11 a.m.-3 a.m., Sunday, noon-midnight.
Chicago
Chicago Auto Show 2/11-2/20 What was already the biggest automotive event around got even bigger this year -- covering 1.2 million square feet. The Chicago Auto Show runs Feb. 11-20 and its coolest new feature: a test track in the Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler exhibit. Car nuts visiting McCormick Place will get to drive on a specially designed course around the perimeter of the 156,000-square-foot exhibit. The collective displays are the largest ever constructed in Chrysler history. The test track will include a Jeep trail course to test its off-road capabilities, including water fording, and a Dodge truck off-road course. Thirty vehicles will operate on the test track at any given time. Bring your camera and your favorite walking shoes. For information, see www.chicagoautoshow.com
Feb. 19-21
Palm Beach
ArtiGras: More than 350 artists from around the world show up for ArtiGras -- and are all present and ready to meet potential Palm Beach patrons. So this is a good chance to meet the artists as you explore the booths and take in the live entertainment, interactive area for kids, art demonstrations and culinary creations. More than 150,000 people attend this event each year. Admission is $3 in advance and $6 at the gate. Children 12 and under are free. Call 561 694-2300 or see www.artigras.org
Feb. 20
Daytona Beach
Daytona 500: The most famous stock car race in the world roars into the east coast Feb. 20. But long-time race fans don't show up in Daytona Beach the day before the big race -- there's too much to do before that. The track hosts more than two weeks starting Feb. 9, known as Speedweeks. Don't miss Daytona USA, a motor sports attraction that's part NASCAR museum, part interactive funhouse. You can watch movies, play video games and even participate in a real pit stop. Tours of the Daytona International Speedway also are available. The group 3 Doors Down will begin its world tour at the Budweiser Shootout on Feb. 12 at the speedway. For tickets and event information, see www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or call 1-800-PITSHOP.
