Sun City Center couple die in crash

By Times Staff Writer
Published February 9, 2005

SUN CITY CENTER - Florida Highway Patrol troopers said a Sun City Center couple died early Tuesday when their 2000 Ford Taurus turned in front of an oncoming car.

Records show that Edward Stanghellini, 76, and Carol Stanghellini, 62, had married barely two years ago, in December 2002.

Troopers said the couple were heading west on Sun City Center Boulevard, attempting to turn south onto Interstate 75, when the accident occurred about 6:45 a.m.

Reports state that Mr. Stanghellini failed to yield to an eastbound 1997 Mercury Mountaineer driven by Adrian Ibarra, 32, of Ruskin. Ibarra's sport utility vehicle plowed into the side of the Taurus, overturned and came to rest on its roof.

The Stanghellinis were pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. Edward Stanghellini was not wearing his seat belt, according to reports. It was not clear whether his wife was wearing hers.

Ibarra was taken to South Bay Hospital with minor injuries.
