LITHIA - Newsome freshman Megan Foley scored twice as the Wolves shut out Citrus Hurricanes 2-0 in Tuesday night's region semifinal.
The game was scoreless at the half, then Newsome came out on the attack and Foley got her first goal only 10 minutes into the second half.
"We had a lot of opportunities early to put one in and we didn't," Foley said. "We just kept pressuring them until one (shot) finally found the back of the net."
The Wolves pressured the Hurricanes all night, with 15 shots on goal, and held Citrus to only two behind the solid defensive play of sophomore Casey Plastek.
Citrus made a few offensive surges, but the Wolves controlled the tempo of the game.
"Overall we had a great game," Wolves coach Kathy Dodd said. "We like to press, which we can do with all of the talented kids we have on our team. They came out and played with good energy."
The Hurricanes did force Newsome to miss a few key scoring opportunities, and Citrus keeper Ashley Christensen kept the game close with seven saves.
"Citrus is a good team," Dodd said. "They made it tough for us to get goals. We just kept at them and the goals came."
Foley got her second goal on an assist from senior Jaclyn Nemeth.
"We played a good game," Foley said. "It all just seemed to come together. We look forward to the regional final and hope to get another look at Freedom."
Newsome gets its wish. The Wolves face Freedom in an all-Hillsborough county final on Friday.
