Parent convicted in party connected to teen's death

MIAMI - A parent who hosted a teen party that ended in a fatal wreck was convicted Wednesday of allowing minors to consume alcohol at her home.
Yasmin Valcarcel pleaded no contest in a plea bargain that let her avoid jail time.
Valcarcel and her husband Enrique, who has since disappeared, were both charged after one 17-year-old was killed and another was left in a coma from a crash after leaving her son's party celebrating the end of the school year in 2001.
The husband was accused by police of asking Gabriel Maynoldi and Michael Sanchez-Agramonte, classmates from Archbishop Carroll High School, to leave the party, attended by about 100 young people.
Maynoldi's car split in two when it crashed into a tree at what police estimated to be more than 100 mph. Sanchez-Agramonte, who died at the scene, had a blood alcohol level of 0.22 percent, and Maynoldi had a blood alcohol level of 0.096 percent. The level at which Florida law presumes impairment is 0.08 percent, but for adults only.
Police said the Valcarcels could have taken Maynoldi's car keys, called the teens' parents, summoned a taxi or sent the boys home with a sober driver.
There is a warrant out for Enrique Valcarcel's arrest.
