Shark Tale
DIRECTORS: Bibo Bergeron, Vicky Jenson, Rob Letterman
CAST: Voices of Will Smith, Renee Zellweger, Robert De Niro, Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Martin Scorsese, Katie Couric, Doug E. Doug, Ziggy Marley
SYNOPSIS: The story of a hip fish (voice of Smith) involved with an undersea mobster underworld.
WHAT WE SAID: Times film critic Steve Persall gave the film a B. He wrote that the movie "is zippy, colorful and packed with pop references, but it's no Finding Nemo. . . . Do we laugh at Shark Tale? Occasionally. Are we emotionally involved in the story and characters as with Finding Nemo? Never. The difference is clear: Finding Nemo was an odyssey, a quest for something deeper, richer in the lives of its main characters. Shark Tale is a plot, which is a good thing for a movie to possess but not enough to make it special."
MPAA RATING: PG; crude humor, mild violence
RUNNING TIME: 90 min.
The Notebook
DIRECTOR: Nick Cassavetes
CAST: Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, Gena Rowlands, James Marden, David Thornton, Sam Shepard, Joan Allen
SYNOPSIS: An aging man (Garner) reads memoirs of his love for an Alzheimer's-stricken woman (Rowlands) when they were young (McAdams and Gosling in flashbacks).
WHAT WE SAID: Times reviewer Philip Booth gave the film a C-. "The Notebook is the sappiest, most sentimental movie of the summer, the worst offender of its genre since the last time Hollywood took on a Nicholas Sparks novel - 2002's forgettable A Walk to Remember," Booth wrote in his June review.
MPAA RATING: PG-13; partial nudity, mature themes
RUNNING TIME: 121 min.
P.S.

CAST: Laura Linney, Topher Grace, Paul Rudd, Lois Smith, Gabriel Byrne, Marcia Gay Harden
SYNOPSIS: A college admissions officer (Linney) becomes involved with a potential student (Grace) who she believes is her long-dead high school boyfriend reincarnated.

MPAA RATING: R; language and sexuality
RUNNING TIME: 89 min.
