Exhibit honors former faculty, staff at Gibbs

ST. PETERSBURG - A tribute to the segregation-era Gibbs High School administration and staff will be at the St. Petersburg Museum of History during February in recognition of African-American Heritage Month.

Minson Rubin, a retired Pinellas County schoolteacher and Gibbs graduate, created the exhibit. For more than 10 years, Rubin has collected memorabilia focusing on the school's history between 1927 and 1968.

Battling Jim Crow inequality, Gibbs teachers fostered a strong sense of identity with the school, its neighborhood and the community's churches.

A free reception is scheduled for 3 p.m. Feb. 27 at the museum for Gibbs graduates and active or retired faculty members.

Rubin said he is making a special effort to invite surviving teachers from the school's earlier years.

The museum is at 335 Second Ave. NE. For reservations, call 894-1052, ext. 200.
