CARROLLWOOD - While Tarence Kinsey was an all-star basketball player at Jefferson High School, the sky was the limit when considering his college options. Three years later, Kinsey is living up to those expectations.

A junior guard at the University of South Carolina, Kinsey is enjoying a standout season and recently had his best outing of the season.

The 2002 Florida Class 4A Player of the Year during his final season with the Jefferson Dragons, Kinsey tied his collegiate career high in rebounds Feb. 2 with 11 in South Carolina's 64-52 win against Arkansas. The 12 points he added in the contest helped him post his second double-double as a South Carolina Gamecock.

"Tarence is an aggressive offensive player," USC coach Dave Odom said. "He looks to score on each trip down the floor, and he's got the ability to be as good as he wants to be."

Kinsey, who remains Jefferson's all-time leading scorer, scored 11 points in the Gamecocks' 80-72 loss to Florida on Jan. 29 and led the team earlier this season with a 23-point effort in a 68-65 overtime victory against South Carolina State.

In his 20 starts this season, Kinsey is averaging 10 points and three rebounds per game. The Gamecocks are 13-7 on the season.

University of South Florida third baseman Krista Holle has had a hot start to the softball season. Holle, a 2002 graduate of Chamberlain High School, has hit .400 during the Bulls' first five games. Holle has five hits and a double and has scored three runs. Also, she is among the Bulls' defensive leaders with 14 assists.

Leto High School graduate Sergio Perez had an outstanding start to his sophomore season at the University of Tampa. Perez, the UT Spartans' No. 1 pitcher, opened the 2005 season with a six-inning effort in a 6-0 win against Eckerd College. Perez allowed one hit while facing 23 batters. He walked one and struck out six.

Temple University junior center Candice Dupree has been named the Owlsports.com Athlete of the Month for January. Dupree, a Wharton High graduate, has averaged team-highs of 17 points, 91/2 rebounds and 21/2 blocks per game in leading the Owls to a 10-0 overall record and 9-0 in the Atlantic-10 Conference as well as a No. 22 national ranking. She also helped the team continue a 14-game winning streak during the month.

Willamina Folks has appeared in all 21 games this season for Florida Southern College. Folks, who played her high school basketball at Wharton, is averaging 17 minutes a game for the Moccasins. She is averaging four points and two rebounds per game and has posted 23 steals this season.
