  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Bigger is better

This is an absolute gem. You upload a picture to the site, and it creates a poster for you up to 65 feet (20 meters for metric fans). If you've got some digitized art you've created, a holiday photo or, on a Valentine's note, a compulsive obsession with another human being, this might be the site for you to display your wares to the world on a grand scale.

Powerful friends

If you spend any time in Washington, you'll come to realize that a lot goes on behind the scenes. And those who wield power often aren't in the public eye. As I waited in the cold for a table at a restaurant one night, a presidential speechwriter was whisked to the front of the line as he was greeted warmly. Which got me thinking: I wondered if could do a better job of writing a speech for the president. Now, with this easy drag-and-drop tool, I may be rubbing shoulders with the elite in the Palm. I'll be sure to send the link to the White House.

Homemade connection

Do you have multiple computers and no desk space? Worse, do you have just one monitor and don't have the compulsion or cash to get a Keyboard/Video/Mouse (or KVM) switch? You're in luck. If you've got more time than money and can follow some fairly technical instructions, you can control multiple computers over your network at home. This software gizmo runs on Windows, Mac and flavors of Unix if your setup leans that way. Nifty stuff.

Fit to be tied

My parents often told me I was a child with an odd way of thinking about things. I had a hard time reciting the alphabet but was capable of reading a newspaper at an early age. The same went for getting the hang of lacing up shoes. Now I'm finding all kinds of ways to lace differently in my adulthood. If vanilla criss-cross lacing has you in search of something racy like the double helix, you're sure to have a creative blast with this one.

Making room for apps

One of the things that freak out Mac OS 9 users when they fire up Mac OS X for the first time is the lack of an area for Applications in the Apple menu. Imagine keeping the Start menu on Windows but not including a link into Programs. I don't know what Apple was thinking either. But here's a nice, free way to keep track of all the apps on one's shiny new Mac. While it's not in the Apple menu, it's a one-click way to be productive.
