Pilots recovering from crash injuries

By Times Staff Writer
Published February 18, 2005

ZEPHYRHILLS - The pilots injured in Wednesday morning's ultralight plane crash at Zephyrhills Municipal Airport were improving Thursday, according to St. Joseph's Hospital officials.

Dale Willard Helleman, 74, the instructor with two broken bones in his leg who authorities think freed himself from the cockpit, was upgraded from critical to serious condition.

Robert Demontigny, 70, the student-pilot who suffered a broken pelvis and had to be cut out of the wreckage, was upgraded to fair condition.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash and said Thursday the plane, a Skyboy two-seat trainer, has no history of problems.
