Daily fishing report
By DAVE ZALEWSKI
Published February 20, 2005
Light winds last week produced calm seas and great fishing.
On Wednesday, we ventured offshore to Swiss cheese bottom in 90 feet of water hoping to catch some red grouper.
After two stops that produced only a few small grouper, it was time for a change. We proceeded to the nearest ledge. Large grunts, triggerfish and mangrove snapper started the activity, feeding on the half of sardine and piece of squid combo that we placed on the hooks. After several minutes of nonstop action with the smaller fish, a rod bent double with a keeper gag grouper that had been lured into range by the activity of the bite. Another gag was put into the box then the bite stopped.
On our last stop of the day about a dozen bonita came up behind the boat. Small pieces of sardine kept them chummed up on the surface while a spinning rod was rigged with a 1/0 live bait hook and a small piece of sardine. The strike was instantaneous.
St. Patrick's Day is the traditional start of our kingfish season. Now is the time to get the tackle out, check the guides and drags and get ready. Hooking the bonita only reminded me of the great fishing that will be here shortly.
