Hurricane deductible relief deadline near

By Times Staff Writer

Floridians who were hit with paying multiple deductibles during last year's hurricane season have about a week left to apply to the state for relief.

Under a law passed by state legislators in December, policyholders have until March 1 to submit an application to the Florida Department of Financial Services. Forms are available at www.fldfs.com or by calling toll-free 1-800-227-8676.

The program was created after homeowners complained they had to pay two or more deductibles for the same property after receiving damage from more than one of the four storms that struck the state. Three of the storms criss-crossed over the same area in Central Florida.

Insurance companies were supposed to send relief forms to their policyholders, but Florida Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher indicated some people may have been overlooked.

The law lets policyholders apply for reimbursement of any amount charged in excess of the first deductible, capped at $10,000 for damage caused by two hurricanes or $20,000 for damage caused by three or more hurricanes.
