PINELLAS PARK - For those in mid county, one of the first signals that spring has sprung is the festivals: Seminole's PowWow, Pinellas Park firefighters' Chili Blaze and Pinellas Park's venerable Country in the Park.
This year, there's a new festival to add to the mix: the BBQfest. Held last year in Brandon, it is moving to Pinellas Park this year. Like the Chili Blaze and Country in the Park, it will be in Town Square Plaza Park, the 15 acres immediately north of City Hall that house the England Brothers Bandshell, 5121 80th Ave. N.
"When I first saw the park, I was floored," said Frank Giglio, the barbecue fest's event coordinator. "It's an amazing, beautiful facility."
Last year, the Brandon event had 20,000 people over three days. Giglio hopes to repeat that.
The BBQfest will run April 1-3 (the same days as the Crawfish Festival at nearby Cajun Cafe on the Bayou). It will feature not only a rib cookoff but also music from Foreigner lead singer Lou Gramm, War, Grand Funk Railroad and Creedence Clearwater Revisited.
Tickets go on sale Saturday. Advance prices: $10 per day general admission; $25 for reserved seating Friday; $35 each day for reserved seating Saturday and Sunday; and $25 for a three-day pass. Children 12 and younger who are accompanied by an adult get in free.
Backstage passes, which are limited, are $110 for a single day and $275 for a three-day pass.
Tickets also can be purchased at the gate, for higher prices. All proceeds go to charity.
