Playground designed for wheelchair access

SEMINOLE - The grand opening ceremony for the new city of Seminole and Rotary Club of Seminole Centennial Playground will be at 11:30 a.m. today.
The $174,500 playground for children ages 2 to 12 is at the Seminole Recreation Center, 9100 131st St. N.
The facility, which is handicapped accessible, features an artificial grass surface and equipment specially designed to be accessible for children in wheelchairs. For information, call Jim Sheets at 391-8345.

Seminole's Recreation Division will show the family movie E.T. at Seminole City Park, 7464 Ridge Road, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday. The Movies Under the Stars event is free and open to the public.
The movie will be projected onto a screen in the park. Popcorn and beverages will be available for purchase by Seminole Fire and Rescue Local 2896. Bring a blanket or chair for comfort.
This year's "Family Night Out" series theme will showcase films for the entire family. The upcoming schedule includes:
Shrek II, March 4.
Spider-Man II, March 18.
The Rookie, March 25.

The Recreation Department will sponsor a trip to St. Petersburg to tour the Florida International Museum's Princess Diana exhibit.
The group will leave the recreation center, 9100 113th St. N, at 10 a.m. Friday, shop at BayWalk, have lunch and see the exhibit at 1 p.m., returning at 4. The trip cost is $35. A recreation card is required. For information, call Dan at 391-8345.

The 38th annual Miss Seminole Scholarship Pageant, a preliminary to the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, N.J., will be Saturday at the Seminole High School auditorium, 8401 131st St. N. For information, call 517-1879.

The annual trip to the Strawberry Festival in Plant City, sponsored by the Seminole Recreation Department, will feature entertainment by Neil Sedaka, performing his hits from the 1950s and '60s.
The trip will be March 10, leaving the recreation center at 9:30 a.m. and returning by 7:30 p.m.
Cost for the trip is $43 per person (includes bus, tip, admission, shortcake and concert).

Seminole's annual Pow Wow Parade and Festival is scheduled for March 11 and 12 at the recreation center, 9100 113th St. N.
The parade will begin at 10 a.m. March 12, leaving from 80th Avenue north on 113th Street to the recreation center. For information, visit www.powwowfestival.com or call 391-8345.

The Recreation Department Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 15 will feature an Irish menu of ham and cabbage, boiled potatoes, green beans, salad, white cake, Irish tea and coffee.
The Grandmother Rockettes will provide the entertainment.

Seminole Recreation Department members will have an opportunity to watch Lipizzaner stallions being trained at their farm in Myakka on March 19.
Trip participants also will visit the Myakka State Park for a picnic lunch and airboat ride. The cost of the excursion, which will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 5 p.m., is $37.
Deadline for registering is March 14 and a recreation card is required to participate. For information, call Dan at 391-8345.
