  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

LHS PROJECT GRADUATION: Parents of Lecanto High School seniors are invited to Project Graduation meetings at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and March 16 and 30 in the school library. A special meeting has been scheduled for March 7 for parents who are unable to attend Wednesday meetings. Parents are encouraged to attend one of the upcoming meetings.

Project Graduation offers a safe way for seniors to celebrate graduation night with their classmates in a fun environment free from drugs and alcohol and shows young people others care about them. To make a donation, make checks payable to LHS Project Graduation and send to P.O. Box 481, Lecanto, FL 34460. Contact chairman Agda Hart, 382-3582, or Charlene Geraghty, 746-4947.

SECO SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: Up to 12 students in Sumter Electric Cooperative's service territory will be chosen to receive $2,000 youth scholarships. To be eligible, students must reside in homes served by SECO, be graduating seniors and be enrolled in an accredited college, university or vocational/technical school by the end of 2005. Applications are available at all SECO offices and in high school guidance offices. Deadline for applications is March 25.

LENTEN FISH FRY: Pope John Paul II Catholic School's eighth-grade class will host fish fry events in the school cafeteria Fridays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. through March 18. The cost is $3 for children age 3 through eighth grade and $5 for adults. All are welcome.

SPRING CONCERT: Tickets are available for the Sugarmill Chorale's spring concert, which will be at 3 p.m. April 9 at Curtis Peterson Auditorium in Lecanto. In a program titled "We Remember," the 40-voice chorale will present a combination of Broadway musicals and patriotic songs in tribute to America, the men and women of the armed forces and veterans. There will be special recognition for veterans as a part of the program.

The group performs two concerts annually: one close to the Christmas holidays, the other in spring close to Easter. A portion of the concerts' proceeds goes to provide a $1,000 vocal music scholarship that is given each year to a Citrus County graduating senior whose career goal will use vocal music in performance, teaching, music therapy or other related fields.

Tickets for the April 9 concert cost $6 each and are available from any chorale member or by calling 382-5865.

Applications for the $1,000 Sugarmill Chorale Vocal Music Scholarship are available from either the choral directors or guidance offices of all Citrus County public and private high schools or may be obtained by calling 382-3498.

Applicants must have at least a 3.2 grade point average, be a Citrus County resident, be graduating from either a public or private high school or homeschooled and must have applied to or been accepted by an accredited college or conservatory or, in exceptional cases, by an individual teacher with outstanding credentials.
