Freedom Village dedicates flagpole

GANDY/SUN BAY SOUTH - Residents of Goodwill's Freedom Village II dedicated a flagpole and raised a flag Monday afternoon.

A Village resident, disabled veteran John Blagg, presented the flag. Another resident talked of his son's commitment to serving the country. Other speakers included former U.S. Rep. Sam Gibbons, state Rep. Faye Culp, Hillsborough County Commissioner Kathy Castor and City Council member John Dingfelder.

Funding for the flagpole came from the Hillsborough County Commission, the Children's Board of Hillsborough County and the Frank E. Duckwall Foundation.

The Village, 5002 Bridge St., is one of five apartment communities operated by Goodwill Industries-Suncoast for people with disabilities or low incomes.

8 students nominated to military academies

SOUTH TAMPA - U.S. Rep. Jim Davis recently nominated eight students from South Tampa area schools for appointments to U.S. military service academies. If selected, the students can earn bachelor of science degrees and serve six years in the military.

These students were nominated from Plant High School: Andrew Vann, Jaime Murray and William Scarle IV to the Naval Academy, Alberto Moscoso to West Point Military Academy and William Flippen III to the Merchant Marine and the Naval academies.

These students were nominated from Robinson High School: Christopher Le to the Air Force and Naval academies, and Kyle Terza to West Point and the Naval academies.

From Tampa Preparatory, Andrea Wallis was nominated to West Point and the Naval academies.

Garden Club to hear about urban landscapes

BAYSHORE GARDENS - The Tampa Garden Club presents a horticulture program featuring Steve Graham, Tampa's urban forestry coordinator. His presentation, "Creating Diversity in Urban Landscapes," starts at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

At 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, the club will host Fun with Flowers by Jayne Hemstreet and friends. Create and take home your own hanging basket. Reservations are required by Friday. Cost is $10 for materials.

Cookbook sale to benefit charities in bay area

TAMPA - Dinner Done Quick Creative Cuisine and the Junior League of Tampa have joined forces to help bay area charities by selling cookbooks from the Junior League's culinary collection. Proceeds will go to the Children's Cancer Center, Children's Literacy, PACE Center for Girls and other league community projects.

Dinner Done also will feature a recipe from the cookbooks on its monthly menus and donate proceeds from cookbook sales at its store to charity. Cookbooks may be purchased at Dinner Done, 10330 N Dale Mabry Highway, Suite 120, online at www.jltampa.org or by calling 254-1734.

UT Alumni Association seeks award nominees

DOWNTOWN - The University of Tampa National Alumni Association is seeking nominees for its annual awards.

The Esse Quam Videri Outstanding Alumni Award is the highest award given to a UT graduate. Recipients must have a record of outstanding service to the UT or the National Alumni Association and have outstanding career achievements or civic involvement.

The Alumni Achievement Award recognizes UT graduates who have made great accomplishments.

The Young Alumnus Award, given to those 35 or younger, recognizes and encourages continued support and service by recent graduates.

The Service and Recognition Award recognizes non-UT graduates who have shown support for UT and the Alumni Association.
