Zephyrhills hires new director for Main Street Inc. program

Susan "Sue" Harvey hopes to recruit more members and volunteers to get people involved in the downtown area.

ZEPHYRHILLS - Main Street Inc. has filled its director's post, vacant since Cynthia Craig resigned Dec. 1.

Susan "Sue" Harvey, a Main Street member who runs a local marketing business with her husband, took over the job this week.

Harvey has lived in Zephyrhills for four years and also served as an ambassador with the Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce.

She said Thursday her immediate goal is to recruit more members and volunteers to the organization.

"I really want to work hard on bringing the community together, getting more people involved in the downtown area," she said.

She hopes to build a pool of more than 100 volunteers who can give a little bit of their time "instead of the same 41/2 people always doing everything," she said.

Harvey said Main Street has events planned for nearly every month of the year, with the annual Founders Day celebration coming up March 12.

Main Street, which has seen its membership numbers fluctuate recently, can be a force for uniting the city, Harvey said. She hopes to recruit businesses as well as residents to become members.

"I feel like when you shake a hand, you build a rapport and your community becomes stronger," she said. "That's huge. Then you have a safer community and a better community."
