Poll of voters gives Bush mixed grades

Associated Press
Published February 25, 2005

TALLAHASSEE - Florida voters think Gov. Jeb Bush has done well in handling the economy and the environment, but not as well in two areas that have been among his highest priorities: education and taxes.

In the Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday, 52 percent approved of the job Bush is doing overall, while 39 percent did not. That is a slip from the 62 percent approval rating Bush got after a string of hurricanes hit Florida last year.

On education, there was a 47-47 percent split on whether progress has been made during Bush's six years in office. On the economy in general, 62 percent saw progress under Bush; 35 percent did not. On job growth, 54 percent saw progress; 41 percent saw none.

As for Bush's handling of the environment, 52 percent approved; 40 percent did not.

While Bush has touted tax cuts, voters in general apparently haven't felt the benefit. Asked if Bush has made progress in reducing taxes, 51 percent said not much or none at all; 41 percent said he has.

The poll of 1,007 voters was conducted Feb. 18-22, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
