Man found dead at Times facility

By Times Staff Writer

TAMPA - Police say they think a man found dead Friday evening at a St. Petersburg Times distribution center on Busch Boulevard died of natural causes.

John Maher, 66, was found dead in the locked bathroom of the Times distribution center Friday evening, said Ed Gruwell, regional circulation manager for the Times. Maher, a former part-time Times employee, had been working as a subcontractor delivering newspapers for a Times carrier. Maher failed to deliver his newspapers Friday morning, and his truck was found parked at the distribution center at 2136 W Busch Blvd., Gruwell said.

Tampa police called Times officials to open the distribution center about 6:15 p.m., and found Maher inside the men's restroom with the door locked, said Gruwell and Tampa police spokesman Joe Durkin.

There was no sign of foul play, Durkin said. The preliminary finding on cause of death is that it appears to have been of natural causes, but officials are awaiting autopsy results.
