Home run gives USF an 11th-inning win over JU

TAMPA - Third baseman Jeff Baisley hit a walk-off home run with one out in the 11th inning to give South Florida a 5-4 win over Jacksonville and a sweep of the three-game set.

It was Baisley's fourth hit of the game and his second home run in as many games. It gave the Bulls their fourth straight victory.

USF (8-5) trailed 3-1 after six innings before taking a 4-3 lead in the seventh. Jacksonville (7-4) got a home run from Zach Haniff in the top of the ninth.

USF used seven pitchers. Yuri Higgins got the win.

STETSON 7-24, SIENA 6-3: The host Hatters tied a school record with 26 hits and had their most runs in 19 years in the second game of the doubleheader. The Hatters tied the mark of 26 hits in an 18-11 win at the College of Charleston in the 1998 conference tournament. Stetson last scored 24 runs in a 27-2 victory over Bethune-Cookman in 1986.

FSU 4, APPALACHIAN ST.: Barret Browning did not allow a hit in five innings, and after being shut out through six innings the Seminoles earned their 12 straight win over the Mountaineers.

TAMPA 8, ALABAMA-HUNTSVILLE 3: The Spartans (11-3) scored seven in the seventh and eighth innings to beat host Alabama-Huntsville. Freshman Johnny Williams pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits with three strikeouts.

UCF 6-8, MONMOUTH 4-3: Mike Billek struck out five and allowed two earned runs in the first game, and Tim Bascom struck out a career-high 10 in the second game.

Football

GAINESVILLE - Former Florida assistant Dwayne Dixon accepted a job as wide receivers coach at North Carolina State.

Dixon, a former Florida receiver who coached for 15 years at UF, is credited with helping develop some of the best receivers during the Steve Spurrier era.

Dixon, 42, played for the Gators from 1980-83 and was a first-team All-SEC selection in 1983. He had spent his entire coaching career at Florida. The assistant coach/inside receivers was let go after Ron Zook was fired in October.

ILLINOIS 16, USF 6: A six-run first inning, four errors by the Bulls and 10 unearned runs propelled the visiting Illini to an eight-run-rule win after five innings. USF 10, TEMPLE 2: The Bulls recovered from their loss to Illinois, using a four-run fourth to vault into control.

UCF 7, UCONN 0: Kelly McIntyre (5-0) tossed her first complete-game shutout, giving up two hits.

SAINT LEO 3, DELTA STATE 0: Katie Heintz (9-1) struck out 11 and gave up three hits for her sixth shutout this season.

SAINT LEO 1, LINCOLN MEMORIAL 0: In her first start this season, Kiki Von Holt shut out the Railsplitters on two hits in three innings before being relieved by Heintz, who struck out eight and stretched her streak to 70 innings without an earned run.

Swimming

FSU: The Seminoles placed eight in the finals and, going into the last session of the meet, are in second place with 383 points at the ACC championships at Atlanta. Virginia leads with 502.5.

Tennis

UCF: The Golden Knights women swept visiting Florida A&M 7-0.
