Flight to Los Angeles makes emergency stop in Orlando

ORLANDO - An American Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles made an emergency landing at Orlando International Airport on Sunday after the smell of smoke filled the cockpit, officials said.
The Boeing 757 carrying 187 passengers and six crew members was met by several fire trucks, whose crews reportedly checked the left engine.
No injuries were reported, said American Airlines spokesman Sonja Whitemon.
"They declared the emergency as a normal precaution," Whitemon said. "Aside from the fact there was a haze in the cabin, it was a normal landing."
The plane left Fort Lauderdale at 11:06 a.m., and passengers smelled smoke about 20 minutes into the flight.
The plane landed in Orlando at 12:15 p.m., said Kathleen Bergen, a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman in Atlanta. She said there was no fire.
A replacement plane was brought in to take the passengers to Los Angeles, Whitemon said. The flight was scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles about five hours behind schedule.
