  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Fashion

A handy fashion lexicon for spring shoppers

Associated Press
Published March 3, 2005

NEW YORK - Ready for spring shopping? Almost - but first let's master the lingo.

Since fashion's vocabulary changes with the seasons, Marshalls style expert Amy Gallagher created a "cheat sheet" of spring buzzwords:

Wedge heel. A heel merged into the sole in one graduated shoe layer, flat on the ground from heel to toe. It's usually made of wood, rubber or cork. Softer than a pump and dressier than flip-flops or tennis shoes, wedge shoes provide a laid-back look, usually with a splash of color.

Shrug: A shrunken sweater, usually worn as a layering piece. A shrug works on a cool night because it has a breezy look but can still warm you up.

Tunic: A long top that hits anywhere from hip to knee; it's usually lightweight and flowing. Can be used for layering under a short cardigan or shrug or worn on its own.

Bohemian chic: A look influenced by African, Indian and Asian culture with clothing and accessories, usually in earthy tones, accented with beading, embroidery or sequin embellishments.

Satin: A fabric made of silk, rayon or synthetic silk fibers, closely woven to give it a distinctive sheen.

Chiffon: A lightweight sheer fabric. Ladylike looks on spring runways yielded flowing skirts in subtle colors and prints such as light pinks and floral prints.

Capri pants: Trousers, usually a slim cut, tapered to the mid-calf. They're named after the Italian island of Capri. Pink, turquoise, sea green and coral are expected to be popular colors for capris.

Building a foundation

NEW YORK - Victoria's Secret's new seamless bra, called Body by Victoria IPEX, was two years in the making. It took a team of designers, engineers and technicians using digital and laser technology to create a fusing process to shave multiple layers of material to form its pad.

The company calls it "the world's most advanced bra" because the pad offers maximum coverage at the center but is virtually weightless at the edges. Victoria's Secret has filed for a patent on the product.

Worth a thousand words

NEW YORK - When Uma Thurman reunites with dance partner John Travolta in the film Be Cool, she is wearing a Dolce & Gabbana tank top with a picture of an art deco-style pinup girl.

The two dance to Sexy by the Black Eyed Peas, featuring Sergio Mendez.

"When you think about rock 'n' roll and sexiness, you only think about Dolce and Gabbana," says Stacey Sher, one of the film's producers.
