Two dead in hit-and-run accident

Published March 3, 2005

A man who sold drugs to undercover detectives fled police in a sport-utility vehicle, ran a red light and killed two people late Wednesday, Clearwater police said.

In an undercover drug operation, a St. Petersburg man with two passengers in an SUV sold crack to undercover officers in the parking lot of a motel at 2061 Gulf-to-Bay Blvd., police said. When police moved in, the SUV drove off, losing several officers who followed it.

Moments later, at 10:30 p.m., the SUV sped west on Gulf-to-Bay, ran a red light at Keene Road and slammed into a car in the intersection, killing two passengers in the car, a 20-year-old Clearwater man and a 17-year-old from North Port, Fla.

Three occupants of the SUV fled on foot but were arrested after a brief search, police said.

The driver of the car, who police identified as Keo Jonquel Young, 19, of 699 Newton Ave. S. in St. Petersburg, was booked on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident with serious injuries or death and two counts of sale and possession of cocaine. Police said their investigation was continuing Thursday.
