Florida State men vs. Virginia
By BRIAN LANDMAN
Published March 6, 2005
WHEN/WHERE: 2 p.m., Donald L. Tucker Civic Center, Tallahassee
TV/RADIO: Ch.44; 1470-AM
RECORDS: FSU 11-18, 3-12; Virginia 13-13, 4-11.
COACHES: FSU - Leonard Hamilton (44-47, third season; 244-257 overall). Virginia - Pete Gillen (117-91, seventh season; 391-219 overall).
NOTABLE: The regular season ends and, despite riding a nine-game losing streak (the longest since they lost nine during the 1984-85 season), the Seminoles have something meaningful to play for besides pride. With a win, they can pull into a tie with the struggling Cavaliers for last in the league and earn the No. 10 seed in next week's ACC Tournament. FSU would win the tiebreaker by virtue of beating a higher-finishing team (Wake Forest; Virginia's best ACC win was against Virginia Tech). ... The Cavaliers were once 8-0, ranked No. 19 in the AP poll and seemingly headed for an NCAA Tournament bid that would secure Gillen's job. But they've faltered and are on a four-game losing streak that might cost them a shot at the NIT; they must be .500 to be eligible for selection. ... Virginia leads the series 16-11which includes a 56-55 win on Feb. 9 in Charlottesville.
