SARASOTA - The inaugural qualifying event for the FLW Professional Redfish Series' eastern division was Friday and Saturday, with 125 two-person teams competing for $200,000.
After Friday, Team Century with Jeff Hagaman of Lutz and James Goodwin of Palm Harbor led the field with two redfish that combined for 13.4 pounds. On the second day, they traveled 63 miles to the same spot near Charlotte Harbor, and they each caught a redfish that combined for 15.5 pounds to win the event and pocket $37,500
"We went back to the same place we fished Friday because there were probably 300 fish at this little hole during the morning low tide," Hagaman said. "We caught seven on the first day and 15 to 20 today" with jerkbaits on light jig heads.
In second place with four redfish weighing 26.8 pounds were Warren Girle of Longboat Key and Billy Harris of Bradenton. They fished north Sarasota Bay with jerkbaits to catch their reds and took home $10,000.
St. Petersburg's Craig Richardson and Tarpon Spring's Ray Van Horn were third with 26.4 pounds. They fished the Fort De Soto area with 3-inch shrimp imitations. Richardson and Van Horn won $5,000.
All of the redfish were released after being weighed.
