Saints pick off Dwight Smith

Published March 7, 2005
Dwight Smith, the only player to return two interceptions for touchdowns in the same Super Bowl, agreed to a five-year contract with the New Orleans Saints.
The Saints didn't disclose financial terms of the deal. ESPN reported that it's worth about $15-million, including a $3.5-million signing bonus.
New Orleans missed the playoffs last season with an 8-8 record and allowed 243 passing yards per game, the sixth-most in the National Football League. The Saints plan to use Smith at free safety, opposite strong safety Jay Bellamy.
Smith started all 16 games at free safety for the Bucs last season, recording 83 tackles and three interceptions. He had 223 tackles and 12 interceptions in four seasons with Tampa Bay.
Smith returned two interceptions for touchdowns as the Buccaneers beat the Oakland Raiders in the Super Bowl following the 2002 season.
