Talk of the bay

Law firm's CEO gives a one-year notice

By JEFF HARRINGTON
Published March 7, 2005

Amid a rash of quick-exiting CEOs in the Tampa Bay area lately (see Walter Industries and Digital Lightwave), no one can accuse Thomas Snow of leaving his Tampa law firm, Carlton Fields, in the lurch.

Snow, 58, has told his board of directors for several years that he planned to retire as president and chief executive officer before turning 60.

After eight years at the helm and 22 years at the firm, he made it official last week, giving his board a full year to name a replacement.

"We've been able to put up an orderly succession plan," Snow said. His announcement triggers the creation of a nominating committee to find the next leader of the 225-lawyer firm by early 2006.

Long-term planning apparently is standard practice in the Snow household.

His wife, Mary, set the stage for the early golden years by retiring nine months ago from her post as assistant general counsel of Walter Industries.

"Both of us focused the way we did in part so we would have the opportunity to retire at an earlier age than might otherwise be expected," Snow said. "We'd like to spend time together. I'd like to have a productive next part of my life."
