USF golfers capture own event by a shot

TAMPA - The USF men's golf team held off Florida Southern, shooting a final-round 290 to win the Dick Wittcoff/USF Invitational on Sunday by one stroke at the Claw.
The Bulls shot 888 in the three-round, 15-team event.
USF senior Brad Quiri tied for second after shooting a final-round 72 to finish at 219. Mercer's Brandan Price was the top individual at 216.
"We played a great weekend of golf," Bulls coach Jim Fee said. "We didn't finish as strong as we would have liked, but in the end we were able to hold (Florida Southern) off."

WOMEN: Host Florida was the top state finisher, placing sixth in the Gator Invitational with 922. Wake Forest won with 883. The other state finishers: FSU tied for 12th (945), USF 17th (963) and UCF 18th (995).
MEN: Host Florida State was in eighth place at 297, six strokes behind leader Coastal Carolina, after the first round of the Seminole Intercollegiate. UCF was tied for fourth at 295.
Baseball
FLORIDA 6, VILLANOVA 5 (10): The Gators (11-3) used four walks in the bottom of the 10th to top the Wildcats. Jared Kubin drew the winning walk, scoring sophomore Brian Leclerc of Clearwater. Darren O'Day (3-1) pitched 21/3 innings for the win.
MIAMI 13, N.C. STATE 7: The host Hurricanes (13-4, 2-1 ACC) captured their inaugural series in the conference. Jon Jay led a 14-hit offense, going 4-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs. He was complemented by Ryan Braun, who went 2-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
WICHITA ST. 2, USF 1: The Bulls couldn't overcome a two-run first by the Shockers in the final round Saturday of the First Hawaii Title Rainbow Tournament in Honolulu. USF (9-9) finished 1-4 in the round-robin event. Wichita State ace Mike Pelfrey, who played for Team USA during the summer, went five innings, holding the Bulls to two hits. Freshman Daniel Thomas (4-2) took the loss, allowing six hits in seven innings and striking out five.
FSU 6, HAWAII-HILO 4 (12): The visiting Seminoles withstood a season-high 18 hits Saturday to improve to 17-1 and extend their season-best winning streak to nine. Tyler Chambliss (4-0) picked up the win. Pinch-hitter Jack Rye drove in the winning run with a single in the top of the 12th, scoring Bryan Henry.
UCF 5, SIENA 2: Redshirt junior Taylor Cobb, who missed last season with an arm injury, went six innings, gave up three hits and struck out five to get the win in his first start for the Golden Knights (15-3).
ECKERD 6, SHIPPENSBURG 1: Starting pitching Joe Sinicola picked up his first win of the season for the host Tritons (7-13), shutting down the Raiders to earn a split in the four-game series.
Softball
Host USF snapped its four-game losing streak, defeating Jacksonville 8-6 in the Louisville Slugger Tournament. Nicole Christensen picked up her first win for the Bulls (15-12), pitching 31/3 shutout innings. ... Monique Doinguez hit a two-run homer to lead host Saint Leo (16-3) to a 3-0 win over Central Missouri. ... Host UCF lost 3-2 to Central Michigan, finishing the weekend 2-2-1 at the Fastpitch Invitational.
Tennis
The FSU men (7-4, 1-1 ACC) beat host North Carolina 4-3. The FSU women (4-3) picked up their second straight road win, toppling San Diego 4-3.
Other sports
HOCKEY: Phil Kessel announced Friday that he will play for Minnesota. Billed as one of the best American-born players in history, the Madison, Wis., native spurned his hometown Badgers.
GYMNASTICS: Florida (12-4) turned in its season-best road score of 196.65, but two-time defending national champion UCLA edged the Gators with a season-high 197.85.
