SPRING HILL - A 37-year-old Spring Hill woman was cited with cruelty to animals Sunday after she was accused of dragging a pit bullterrier chained to the bumper of her pickup truck.
Cassandra Moss received the misdemeanor citation and was ordered to appear in court April 13.
According to a sheriff's report, Oneida Street residents called 911 about 7:45 p.m. Sunday after they saw the puppy being dragged behind a Ford Ranger.
When a neighbor yelled to Moss, she stopped the purple pickup at Oneida Street and Landover Boulevard, leaving a puddle of blood, according to the report. She exchanged words with the witness, threw the dog into the back of the truck and drove down the block to her house at 13137 Oneida St., the report states.
When authorities arrived, they discovered blood on the pavement. The dog, which appeared underfed, needed immediate medical attention. According to the report, the puppy had severe injuries to its paws, where skin and hair were torn off.
Moss denied knowing that the dog was chained to the pickup, saying she would never harm any dog. Moss' relatives later explained that the puppy was chained to the vehicle's bumper because it was strong enough to break free from the garage.
If convicted, Moss could receive up to one year in jail and a $5,000 fine.
