Cold front may slap area with sunrise storms, gusts

By Times Staff

Wind gusts of 40-50 mph are possible early today as potentially severe weather moves through the Tampa Bay area.

The high winds and possible showers are expected about sunrise or soon afterward, the National Weather Service says.

A line of showers and thunderstorms moved into the eastern Gulf of Mexico late Monday and was expected to move southeasterly into the Tampa Bay area about daybreak.

While the storms also are expected to bring slightly higher tides, the primary threat will be high wind gusts as the line of showers moves through, said meteorologist Ernie Jillson.

The combination of the cold front moving into warm moist air, and an upper level disturbance over the Southeast, will create winds up to 60 mph at 5,000 feet. Thunderstorms could push those winds to the surface, increasing the threat for damaging winds.

As the storms move through, cooler, drier air is expected to follow, with daytime highs Wednesday and Thursday in the low to mid 60s.
