Election results

Redington Beach

Tuesday's election wasn't about which commission candidate would best represent the voters' wishes, but rather about how much commissioners will be paid.

What the voters said narrowly - the referendum questions were decided by 19 and 25 votes, respectively - was that their mayor and commissioners are paid enough for the time they spend working on behalf of residents.

As a result, the mayor's salary won't increase to $500 a month (now $100), nor will commission salaries increase to $300 a month (now $50). This is the second time voters rejected similar proposed pay hikes for the mayor and commissioners.

In an unrelated question, voters rejected changing the name of Town Park to "The Ronald W. Reagan Memorial Park." They voted 233 to 38 not to rename the park after the deceased president.

None of the referendum questions were placed on the ballot by the commission, but instead were the result of resident petitions.

Mayor Bob Fountaine and Commissioners Sam Maniotes and Linda J. Wilson were all automatically elected without opposition.
