COMMUNITY THEATER: The New Tampa Players will present The Miracle Worker, William Gibson's portrayal of Helen Keller and her tutor, Annie Sullivan. Keller, blind and deaf from childhood, was an unruly child with a violent temper and was in danger of being sent to a mental institution. Sullivan, struck blind by a disease in early childhood, had recovered her sight through operations and graduated as valedictorian from the Perkins Institute for the Blind. Sullivan became Keller's tutor and was able to reach her behaviorally and educationally, and both went on to become major advocates for the rights of the blind. The play will run at 8 p.m. today and Saturday, at the University Community Area Center, 14013 N 22nd St. Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for students and seniors, and $10 for groups. SENIORS EXPO: The 16th annual Temple Terrace Seniors Expo will be today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Omar K. Lightfoot Recreation Center, 10901 N 56th St. There will be more than 30 senior citizen agencies there to answer questions and distribute information, as well as free blood pressure, bone density and glucose screenings. A free continental breakfast will be provided by Sweet Tomatoes and a free hot lunch by Hillsborough County Aging Services. There will also be free bingo, entertainment and door prizes. CHESS TOURNAMENT: Students in grades K-12 can compete in MOSI's Chess to the Max tournament, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at MOSI, 4801 E Fowler Ave. Members of the U.S. Chess Federation will compete in a rated tournament, while nonmembers compete in an unrated tournament. Age divisions will be kindergarten-third grade, fourth-sixth grade, and seventh-12th grade. Adults are also welcome to participate. Those who have not registered should be there by 8:45 a.m. Admission is $10 for members and $13 for nonmembers with preregistration, or $20 for member and $25 for nonmember walk-ins, and includes admission to MOSI exhibits.
