Pine Island beach unfit for swimmers

By Times Staff Writer
Published March 12, 2005

The Hernando County Health Department is recommending that people refrain from swimming at Pine Island beach this weekend.

Bacteriological test results received by the department indicate the water quality at Pine Island Beach is in the poor range. An advisory issued Friday suggests that water contact may pose an increased risk of infectious disease, particularly for susceptible individuals. While the department can recommend that people not enter the water, officials cannot prohibit individuals from doing so, said Mark Springer, an environmental specialist with the department. Springer said the department will do a resampling on Monday and will have the results by Tuesday afternoon. The beach was under an advisory until recently. "We just opened it for a week," said Springer, adding that the latest bacteria is probably caused by bird dung. For information call the Health Department at 540-6800.
