NEW ORLEANS - High Limit delivered after a long layoff, cruising to win the Louisiana Derby on Saturday.
Without a race in 138 days and moving into stakes company for the first time, High Limit gave trainer Bobby Frankel a contender for the Kentucky Derby in two months.
High Limit took the lead from Storm Surge just out of the gate and cruised to beat Vicarage by four lengths.
High Limit covered the 1 1-16th miles in 1:42.74 and returned $7.20, $6.20 and $4.40. Vicarage, trained by Todd Pletcher, was second, and Storm Surge was third.
TAMPA BAY DOWNS: Despite a bad start out of the gate, Tap Day ran down the leaders and beat Above the Wind by a length in the $65,000 Budweiser Challenge Stakes in Oldsmar. Attack the Books was third, another length back. Tap Day returned $6.20 as the 2.10-1 second choice. Tap Day has eight wins and one second-place finish in 16 starts. He boosted his earnings for owner Edward P. Evans to $250,187 with the $30,000 winners share.
GULFSTREAM PARK: Trainer Nick Zito added to his list of Kentucky Derby candidates. Bellamy Road, a 3-year-old owned by Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, won a $35,000 allowance race at Hallandale Beach by 153/4 lengths. Zito already had four Derby hopefuls: High Fly, Noble Causeway, Sun King and Andromeda's Hope.
AQUEDUCT: Primary Suspect beat Shake You Down by a length in the 112th $107,000 Toboggan Handicap in New York.
