Hillsborough River boater shot in neck

By Times Staff Writer

TAMPA - A woman partying on a pontoon boat was shot in the neck along the Hillsborough River on Monday night, Tampa police said.

The woman and five others, whose names police did not release, were on a boat traveling north on the Hillsborough River when they heard a loud noise and noticed smoke just as they passed under the Columbus Drive bridge just before 10 p.m., said Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy.

No one knew that a gun had been fired from the river's bank until they noticed that the woman had been shot in the neck. The boat docked at 1304 W Charter St. to call for help.

McElroy said the woman was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and was in critical condition.

Police who responded to the area found ducks along the bank that had also been shot, McElroy said.

"We don't know if this woman was the intended target," McElroy said.

The people on the boat told police they saw people running from the area from where the bullet came after the shot was fired. Officers continued combing the area late Monday night.
