The Rev. D. Scott Boggs, longtime pastor of Northside Baptist Church, has resigned.
Until a replacement pastor is hired, the Rev. Timothy Kroll, senior associate pastor, will assume additional duties and do much of the preaching.
Boggs resigned suddenly, Kroll said. He had been at Northside Baptist for 101/2 years.
The congregation learned of his decision during services on Feb. 5 and 6, Kroll said.
In a letter to the congregation, Boggs wrote, in part, "My family and I are in need of a time of rest and peace." Kroll said the former Northside pastor has remained in St. Petersburg. Church deacons are assembling a search committee, which will be ratified during a special congregational meeting, to find a new senior pastor.
Kroll, 37, said he is open to being senior pastor, but is willing to continue in his present role and support whoever is hired. He has been at the independent Baptist church since August 2002.
About 1,200 people attend weekend services at Northside Baptist. The church, at 6000 38th Ave. N, operates Northside Christian School. This year the school has about 820 students from preschool to grade 12.
