Truck driver in fatal crash is identified

ZEPHYRHILLS - The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the victim in Monday's fatal accident on Eiland Boulevard.

Eldon Babcock, 64, of Montrose, Pa., was the driver killed when his westbound 2004 GMC pickup truck collided with an eastbound 1997 Peterbilt dump truck that lost control and spun into the opposite lane. Babcock was killed at the scene, the patrol said, and his body was trapped inside the pickup's crushed cab.

Mary Babcock, the pickup's passenger, was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where she was reported in critical condition Tuesday. The occupants of the dump truck, driver Roy Thomson, 31, of Lutz, and 21-year-old Jennifer Kentfield, were taken to East Pasco Medical Center, where neither were listed as patients Tuesday.

Both drivers wore seat belts, a patrol report said. The accident remained under investigation, the patrol said.
