TAMPA - Rogelio Villanueva is the 2005 support employee of the year for the Hillsborough School District. He has been a migrant program recruiter for the past 15 years.

His responsibilities include helping identify migrant students and assist them and their families. Elizabeth Chavez, a 2004 graduate of Plant City High School, credited Villanueva during a Tuesday award ceremony for helping her succeed academically. She now attends Hillsborough Community College.

As the winner, Villanueva received $1,000, tickets to several area sports and entertainment venues, a custom ring and a limousine ride to work.

The other finalists were Mary Smith, data processing at Buckhorn Elementary; Teresa Lynn Staggs, a special education aide at Dover Elementary; Rosa Harris, a paraprofessional at Ben Hill Middle; and William Strack, a behavior specialist at Pizzo Elementary. There were 189 nominees for the honor.
