  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Hot ticket: A 'Dream' that's an eye-opener

The Asolo Theatre Company takes on Shakespeare's fairy world with A Midsummer Night's Dream. Director Paul Weidner promises a contemporary, high-energy approach with a cast that includes Devora Millman as Titania, James Clarke as Oberon, Sarah Stockton as Hermia, John Sterling Arnold as Bottom and Aaron Kliner as Puck.

Costume designer Pamela Scofield, whose sketch for Titania's costume is pictured here, was inspired by a retrospective exhibit of Lee Bontecou sculptures at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. "I think we wanted to have some fun, shake up people's expectations and get away from the usual," Scofield said. "Since a large portion of the cast is young and students, it made sense to key into them. Mostly we want it to be fun but beautiful and luscious, sensual and earthy."

The Asolo production was funded in part by a grant from Shakespeare in American Communities, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts that seeks to reach underserved students.

A Midsummer Night's Dream opens Friday at 8 p.m. and runs through May 8. $15-$47. Toll-free 1-800-361-8388; www.asolo.org
