Check out play aboard Merchant Marine ship

CHANNEL DISTRICT - The Victory Theater Company presents Tony Award-winning play Mister Roberts on board the S.S. American Victory docked behind the Florida Aquarium. The play opens at 8 p.m. today and runs for three weekends.

The Merchant Marine vessel was used in combat duty during World War II and recently was restored as a museum. Last year, one of the cargo holds was converted into a theater. The cargo hatch opens to create an under-the-stars theater experience.

Performances will be tonight, Saturday and Sunday, March 25 and 26, and April 1 and 2. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $25. Dinner and show tickets are available through Stump's Supper Club for $30 and the Signature Room for $50. Proceeds benefit the Victory War Memorial and Mariners Museum.

Learn about wines, enjoy cuisine at Tampa dinner

TAMPA - Tampa Bay Uncorked, a group of young adult wine enthusiasts, hosts its Spring Wine Dinner at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Opium, 14445 N Dale Mabry Highway. Uncorked invites guests to experience the cuisine of chef Caroline Thaxton at the recently opened Opium restaurant.

Sheila Garcia of Opici Wines will guide guests through the various wines served, and attendees will be able to order bottles at a discount.

YBOR CITY - The Ybor City Chamber of Commerce hosts a networking event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at West Palm Wines, 2009 N 22nd St. The night includes wine tastings, hors d'oeuvres and door prizes.

Art fundraiser benefits scholarships, hospice

DOWNTOWN - Las Damas de Arte, a cultural organization celebrating women in the arts, is holding its annual fundraiser through March 31 at the University of Tampa's Scarfone/Hartley Gallery, 310 N Boulevard. The exhibit, Sunday in the Arts, features the works of more than 50 female artists.

All artwork is for sale with proceeds going to art scholarships and grants as well as to organizations such as Hospice, AIDS Art Reach and MacDonald Training Center.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. Call 253-6217.

Children can find prizes at Saturday egg hunt

SOUTH SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - The South Seminole Heights Civic Association, Central Christian Church and the Tampa Bay Federal Credit Union are hosting a Spring Carnival Egg Hunt at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rivercrest Park at Osborne Avenue and River Boulevard.

Children 12 and younger are invited to participate. Special prizes will be awarded, including one egg with a $50 savings bond.

Children's centers need volunteers to play, tutor

TAMPA - The Child Abuse Council seeks volunteers to assist at its children's centers in Clair Mel, Palm River, Ruskin, Plant City and Temple Terrace and its main office in South Tampa.

The centers need volunteers to read and play with preschoolers in the mornings and to tutor school-age children in the afternoons. The South Tampa office needs volunteers for clerical assistance, including data entry and preparing bulk mailings.

Garden club given grant for restoration at school

TAMPA - The Amaryllis Garden Circle was recently awarded a $1,000 grant from the Principal Financial Group to help restore and preserve gardens at Gorrie Elementary School, which dates to 1903.

National Garden Clubs Inc. established the grant program to enhance gardens at historic sites across the nation. The Amaryllis Garden Circle, a member of the Tampa Federated Garden Clubs, was one of three selected in the state of Florida.

Get back in shape at Stretch and Tone class

OLD HYDE PARK - The city of Tampa's Parks and Recreation Department is offering a Stretch and Tone class for adults at the Kate Jackson Community Center, 821 S Rome Ave. Spice up your workout with full body toning and resistance training combined with stretching that is designed to increase muscular strength, endurance and flexibility.

Classes meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays starting next week through June 28. The cost is $4 for the entire course.

Seniors who qualify can receive volunteer stipend

TAMPA - Seniors in Service of Tampa Bay Inc. is seeking volunteers to serve at-risk and special-needs children in schools or frail elders in their homes throughout Hillsborough County.

Income-qualified seniors over the age of 60 who volunteer 20 hours per week receive a tax-free stipend of up to $53 per week, plus training, travel reimbursement and other benefits.
