ZEPHYRHILLS - The city will pay $65,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a man injured in a 2003 car crash with a police officer.
Walter J. Dye, 55, said police Officer Joseph Rinaldo negligently operated his patrol car, causing the July 10, 2003, crash at Fort King Road and Eiland Boulevard.
Police Capt. Randy Belasic said Rinaldo was eastbound on Eiland chasing a suspicious vehicle when he ran the red light at Fort King. He had just activated his overhead lights when his patrol car struck Dye, who was heading north.
Rinaldo, the school resource officer at Zephyrhills High School, was ruled at fault in the accident and received a written reprimand in accordance with department policy, Belasic said.
In his complaint, Dye said the crash caused him pain and suffering, bodily injury, lost earnings and aggravation of a previous condition.
His wife, Jamie, also was listed in the complaint, alleging deprivation of comfort, aid, assistance and enjoyment from her husband. Each sought damages in excess of $15,000.
Dye's attorney, Kimberly Morris, declined to comment.
City Manager Steve Spina said the settlement was the best option.
"It was just the safest course of action and in the best interest of both parties," he said.
The settlement is covered by the city's risk management insurance policy, Spina said.
