Woman arrested, accused of shaking baby girl

By Times Staff Writer
Published March 18, 2005

ZEPHYRHILLS - A 24-year-old woman is accused of shaking an infant, fracturing the baby's skull. Brandy Ann Shuler, 4329 Court St., was arrested Wednesday and will face charges of aggravated child abuse.

The Pasco Sheriff's Office is not disclosing what, if any, relationship Shuler has to the baby girl. The arrest affidavit says Shuler "willfully and intentionally" shook the girl last June, causing the baby's forehead to strike her own. A doctor diagnosed shaken-baby syndrome with impact, which can result in mental retardation, speech and learning disabilities, paralysis, seizures, hearing loss, vision problems and, rarely, death. Infants are vulnerable because their heads are large and their neck muscles are still weak.

Shuler was released on her own recognizance Thursday from the county jail at Land O'Lakes.
