INVERNESS - A judge has sentenced Maurice McDaniel to 30 years in prison for bilking an elderly couple out of their life savings.
In January, a jury found McDaniel, 58, guilty of two counts of exploitation of an elderly person, two counts of grand theft and one count of organized fraud. Prosecutors said McDaniel took nearly half a million dollars from Harry and Mildred Edgerly.
They said McDaniel and his wife, Anne Marie, met the Edgerlys in early 1999, befriended them, and within a year had persuaded the couple to give them money from various investments and insurance policies. Mrs. McDaniel made a deal with prosecutors in early 2004: In exchange for testifying against her husband, six of the seven charges against her were dropped. She pleaded guilty to one count of exploitation of the elderly and awaits sentencing. Circuit Judge Ric Howard on Thursday ordered Maurice McDaniel to serve two concurrent 30-year prison sentences.
