Consolidator breaks records in a race to Kentucky Derby

ARCADIA, Calif. - D. Wayne Lukas did a poor job training Consolidator before the San Vicente Stakes five weeks ago, so he decided to get tough with the Kentucky-bred colt. It worked.
Consolidator was a surprise winner of the $250,000 San Felipe Stakes on Saturday, taking command at the top of the stretch to give Lukas a top Kentucky Derby hopeful.
Consolidator, fourth as the favorite in the San Vicente on Feb. 13, covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.11 - a second faster than the previous standard set by Pole Position in 1979.
And Consolidator's winning margin of 61/2 lengths over Giacomo was also a record - a half-length more than Variety Road's winning margin in 1986.
"I just did a poor job the first time," Lukas said. "I went after him a little bit more in the mornings. ... I just said, "Look, it's time to grow up.' "
OAKLAWN: Afleet Alex faded and Rockport Harbor couldn't hold the lead. That allowed Greater Good to storm past both for a half-length victory in the $250,000 Rebel Stakes at Hot Springs, Ark., and raised questions about two Kentucky Derby contenders. The trio likely meets again in the Arkansas Derby on April 16.
AQUEDUCT: Survivalist lived up to his name and won the Gotham Stakes at New York, sweeping past the field in the final strides. Pavo, who finished second, was disqualified to fourth after stewards ruled the colt's jockey, Alan Garcia, inadvertently whipped Naughty New Yorker in the face. Garcia rod most of the race with his feet out of the stirrups.
